Ollie Palmer just revealed his dream Wrexham five-a-side team as Max Cleworth snubbed

Ollie Palmer has sparked plenty of discussion among Wrexham supporters after revealing his all-time Wrexham five-a-side team.

Palmer played a major role in Wrexham’s meteoric rise from the National League to the Championship after joining for a then-club record fee of £300,000 in January 2022.

The towering Englishman struck an incredible partnership with Paul Mullin during his time at the club, firing 44 goals in 150 appearances before joining Swindon Town in August 2025.

Now, after reflecting on his time at the club, Palmer has selected a five-a-side team made up of his favourite teammates from his time at Wrexham.

“I’m gonna go Arthur in goal because he was so important for us, many times I’ve been stood in that centre circle and I think it’s going into the top corner and he somehow tips an unbelievable save,” Palmer told Wrexham’s official page.

He then selected Eoghan O’Connell in defence, describing the Irishman as “an absolute stalwart” and an “aggressive leader”, while snubbing Max Cleworth despite his impressive season and growing importance.

In midfield, Palmer chose Elliot Lee on the basis that “he scored so many important goals”, while Mullin was played off the right in a deeper attacking role.

Steven Fletcher completed Palmer’s squad as the striker “had such a big role to play off the bench and won us so many points”.

Why Max Cleworth had a stronger case than Eoghan O’Connell

Cleworth, despite only being 23, is one of Wrexham’s final survivors from their time in the National League.

The talented central defender has experienced everything at Wrexham, progressing through the ranks since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over in early 2021.

From his teens to his early 20s, Cleworth has gone from being in a National League side to playing a key role in pushing for promotion to the Premier League.

The centre-back made his league debut in Phil Parkinson’s first match against Solihull Moors in August 2021, and he is now the longest-serving player and the club’s leading appearance-maker under Parkinson’s tenure, with a total of 191 appearances.

Now, let’s compare those numbers of appearances to O’Connell’s. It’s difficult to argue why Palmer didn’t choose Cleworth over O’Connell, who only made 91 appearances.

In addition to his appearance record for the club, Cleworth’s League One campaign earned him a place in the EFL Team of the Season, as well as Players’ Player of the Season.

The centre back is a regular goal threat for Wrexham, too, picking up an impressive seven goals in League One and currently sits on three goals and four assists in the Championship this season.
