- The top six race
- From the National League to the Championship
- Greatest sports story ever
Wrexham director Shaun Harvey said if the club gains promotion to the Premier League this season, “It would be the greatest sports story ever”
Wrexham currently holds the final Championship playoff position as the Red Dragons prepare for the club’s biggest fixture in recent years, hosting Middlesbrough on the final day of the season. A win will secure the playoffs in their first season in the Championship.
Wrexham’s situation isn’t entirely positive, as their goal difference keeps them just ahead of seventh-place Hull City. Derby County are also in contention for the top six, sitting in eighth, only one point behind.
The Red Dragons have never before appeared in the top flight of English football. However, in recent years, Wrexham have rapidly ascended through the English football pyramid since being acquired by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2021.
The club’s season can be considered a success
“The time is now. We’ve got one game to go of the league season,” said Harvey
“To use Alex Ferguson’s favourite phrase, it definitely is squeaky bum time. Will we make it or won’t we make it? Well, there’s a story to be written either way.”
“Because whatever happens, we’ve gone from being a non-league team to the best team in Wales by virtue of league position.”
“We’ve finished in our highest league position ever, and the women’s team have won the league and will compete in the Champions League.”
He later continued to say, “In all circumstances, our season should be viewed as ‘we nearly made it’, rather than ‘we just missed out’.
“And whilst that’s a subtle difference, the reality is we have no right to actually achieve what we have done so far this season.
“If we do make it to the playoffs on Saturday afternoon, we have the chance of going back-to-back-to-back-to-back promotions.
“If we achieve that, as others have said and I agree, it would be the greatest sports story ever.
“There’s no script, just a story to tell.
“As it happens, it’s authentic, and that’s what makes Wrexham so relatable to many others who care to dream.”
The final day could come down to goal difference, as Derby could surpass both teams if Hull and Wrexham lose.
Wrexham have achieved three consecutive promotions to the Championship and can secure a fourth by winning against Middlesbrough on Saturday.
